BiG: Believe in Green

August 15 was International Green Smoothie Day!  Who knew?!  Tera from The Raw Divas told me about it.  She does some fantastic work!  Such as the W.I.S.H. Summit back in March of this year.  I really enjoyed listening to all of the experts talk during that summit, so when Tera sent me an email about her latest endeavor Believe in Green I immediately signed up for the offer!

Believe in Green is a project funded by people like me, who donate $10 to participate in this fantastic cause.  I can think of a bunch of things we spend $10 on all the time, but why not use that money to help you and others get healthier?  Plus, 100% of the money donated for this event will go to support the Lower East Side Girls' Club and their health and nutrition program.

Once you sign up you get access to 10 days of green smoothies via email and 10 AMAZING interviews with:

Kris Carr
Julia Butterfly Hil
Phaedra Ellis-Lamkin
Majora Carter
Angela Stokes-Monarch
Ani Phyo
Anthony Anderson
Sarma
Victoria Boutenko,
Robyn Openshaw
and Renee Loux!

I'm not trying to push a sale or anything (I get no benefit, personal or monetary, from telling you about it) -- just trying to make you aware of this amazing offer.  Plus I think everyone should try green smoothies!

So far I'm enjoying the Green Smoothie Challenge. Plan on getting some more organic produce to experiment will all of these new and exciting recipes Tera keeps sending out!

I Washed Mine, You Should Too

Hanging to dry...
Green Bags have grown in popularity over the past few years, and I like that.  They were like a new fashion trend around here.  Once our local Publix grocery store had them, every other store with consumer goods seemed to follow suit.  But this "trend" didn't start with a chain grocery store, it began years and years ago with the awareness and wisdom of Earth conscious individuals.  I'm all for our massive population using less plastic anything.  You may not realize just how much this man-made material is affecting our planet.  More research comes out on the dangers of plastics all the time.  Remember the big buzz about bad BPA plastics?

Most of the "green bags" you see in the grocery stores are made from Polypropylene, basically plastic fabric that is washable.  I washed my green bags with a few towels and hung them up to dry.  (I must have a bag in every color of the rainbow!  This isn't even my complete collection.) The fabric dries quickly and as for the little plastic liner at the bottom, I hand washed those separately.

It's important to wash your reusable bags regularly to rid them of bacteria.  Designate certain bags for carrying meat/poultry/fish/eggs only, and other bags for produce, breads, or boxed items.

Green Smoothie Power

The weekend is here everyone!  I'm posting late night...

Eats

Brekkie

I attempted a real green drink this morning -- no almond milk, bananas or yogurt. Missed the protein though.  Maybe I should add nuts next time?

Ingredients: 2 cups organic mixed greens, 1/2 cucumber, 2 stalks organic celery, slice of fresh ginger, 1 chopped organic gala apple, 1-2 cups alkaline water, and a splash of OJ.

My blender filled the entire jug.  My tummy could only handle 1/2 of it!  Saved the rest for later.

Lunch

Teresa brought us some fresh hummus and crackers to snack on.  Thanks T!

I heated up a bit of last night's leftovers.

And made 1/2 cucumber feta sandwich.

Then I enjoyed 3 of these little chocolates for dessert...

Snack

When I got home from work I made 2 of these cheddar and turkey roll ups. Yum!

Dinner

Wild Sockeye Salmon, Brown Rice and Organic Zucchini, and a glass of pinot noir.

That's Roxy's food on the left.  She gets a watered down version of what I eat.

And I had 2 squares of this chocolate... none for Rox.

Several hours later Marcel had a craving for pizza, so we went to Westshore Pizza and picked up a few slices.  I ate about 1/2 of one... it was so good!

Healthy Habits

Nourishment
Fruits: 1 serving
Veggies: 6 servings
Water: 1.5 liters

Body Care
Body Brushing & Magnesium Oil: check!
Oil Pulling: skipped... need more oil.
Exercise: Tempo 2!  Had a great workout tonight and have a feeling I'm going to experience "muscle awareness" tomorrow.

Supplements
Alfalfa: 6 caps
B-12 Plus: 4 sprays
Vitamin D3: 8 sprays

On the agenda this weekend:
  • SHADOWSELF @ Market on 7th in Ybor Saturday night.
  • Farmer's market either Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon... and make some fresh recipes from my goodies!
  • Enjoy the weather and a spa day at home.
  • Wash and dry the Rox.
  • Lots of stuff to do around the apartment.
  • And I still have to return some stuff... been putting it off for a while.

Starting to get really sleepy...

Au revoir!

P.S. I made it all week without coffee or lattes! Plus, I didn't eat breakfast out once... and lunch only once! Well, twice if you count my Greek salad on Sunday.  Next on my agenda... reducing sugar once again.

No fruits today.
Veggies: 2 servings today. (My smoothie killed the produce this morning.)
Water: 1.5 liters

Eats

Brekkie

I attempted a green monster with the ingredients in my fridge, but the overall final drink was not edible. Yuck! So much for trying to save frozen foods (or dishes apparently) during moves.

I did get to use my new beautiful green drink container from The Raw Divas though! Isn't it cute? ♥

So... I got Starbucks instead. (( sigh ))

Lunch

About 2/3 of this chicken burrito bowl from Chipotle.

Dinner

More Mexican food for dinner...

Our classic chicken tacos. Yum!

Dessert

Edy's Creamy Coconut Popsicle and 3 Iced Oatmeal Cookies with a little milk.

{ sorry no photo }

NOTE TO SELF
Drop your Starbucks habit like it's hot... and let the dessert go with it. Drink your greens!

Au revoir!

P.S. One more post and then it's time for bed...

Happy 40th Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Wow, it's the 40th Annual Earth Day. How cool is that?!

Sadly, I'm not doing much for Earth Day this year... but every day is Earth Day to me. Last year's Earth Day was so cool because of the Trashy Fashion Show. They are doing it again this year, but I can't make it... massage before work, then a full work day, then a hair appointment. No time for earthy events!

Every Day is Earth Day

{ my recycling for this week }

We all know April is Earth Month. There's Earth Hour and Earth Day, plus a whole bunch of Earthy events going on throughout the month. Every day is Earth Day to me!

I've been recycling for as long as I can remember. Each week I'm sorting my trash from recyclables: Paper, Cardboard, Egg Cartons, Glass, Plastic, Aluminum. I don't have access to full recycling near my apartment, so I use the Safety Harbor Recycling Center downtown and drop off my stuff plus everything I can collect (and save from the trash) at work. You could call me The Recycling Coordinator.

In honor of Mother Earth, I will photograph all of my recycling this month and blog it for the world to see!

Here are some helpful recycling links:

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Although I will be staying home instead of celebrating the Irish festivities by going out to gawk at those drunk on green beer, I will enjoy this holiday with a green spirit. (Trying to avoid the drunk drivers at all costs. Last year was a close enough call for me.)

Already enjoyed my Green Monster this morning and have Irish Beef Stew in the crock-pot cooking for dinner! Maybe I'll turn a beer green just for the fun of it.

Don't forget to take your Premium Blended Alfalfa for good luck!

May you and your loved ones have a safe and happy Irish holiday and find gold at the end of every rainbow.

Au revoir!

Friday's GreenScope

The bold part is so true...

Are you on the fence about how to change your lifestyle for the better? If you feel that the sad display of produce at the local grocery stores won't cut it anymore, think about joining a CSA. Read more at http://www.ecosalon.com/5_reasons_to_join_a_csa_now/.

I would love to join a CSA. There's a great one in Tampa near my place at Sweetwater Organic Farm. Maybe after I move in May... saving to move, moving to save!

The Amazing Cucumber

Lets start with a commonly asked question: is a cucumber a fruit or a vegetable?

Technically it is a fruit because it contains the seeds to reproduce, but typically cucumbers are grouped with veggies due to their use. The fruit is commonly harvested while still green, and eaten as a vegetable, whether raw, cooked, or made into pickled cucumbers.

Cucumbers are a great digestive aid and have a cleansing effect on the bowel. With just a handful of calories per cup, cucumbers have always been the dieter's dream.

I received this email today. Although I don't normally participate in email forwards, I really like this information!

This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems:

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day.
Just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon?
Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?
Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?
Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. (WOW)

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool?
Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!! (DOUBLE
WOW)

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?
Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge?
Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes?
Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?
Take a cucumber sliced rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?
Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students
during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints?
Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?
Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake?
Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems.

Now I want to stock up on cucumbers!

Check out these adorable Heart Shaped Cucumbers I discovered today. Stars too!

How perfect for the month of love and Valentine's Day! Just think of how beautifully decorated your salad would be with these tasty babies.

Anyone know where to purchase them?

Au revoir!
