October is Non-GMO Month

NonGMOProject.Org
You may be asking yourself, "What does GMO stand for? And why is October now Non-GMO Month?"

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms.  Sounds pretty scientific, huh?  What if I told you that you've been eating GMOs daily, and have been for years, without even knowing what a GMO is.  For the majority of us, that's the truth.  These days I'm seeing more about saying No to GMOs in the media.  It could be that I read up on health and food related topics for my own personal research, but I can spot the Non-GMO labels on more and more products these days.

NonGMOProject.Org is a wonderful research tool that will help educate and empower consumers to make intelligent decisions.  Instead of trying to re-write the fantastic information on their site, I've included some FAQ's below.  Get the full listing at http://www.nongmoproject.org/consumers/about-gmos/.

What are GMOs?
GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Are GMOs safe?
In 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GMOs, because they are not considered proven safe. In the U.S. on the other hand, the FDA approved commercial production of GMOs based on studies conducted by the companies who created them and profit from their sale. Many health-conscious shoppers find the lack of rigorous, independent, scientific examination on the impact of consuming GM foods to be cause for concern.

How common are GMOs?
According to the USDA, in 2009, 93% of soy, 93% of cotton, and 86% of corn grown in the U.S. were GMO. It is estimated that over 90% of canola grown is GMO, and there are also commercially produced GM varieties of sugar beets, squash and Hawaiian Papaya. As a result, it is estimated that GMOs are now present in more than 80% of packaged products in the average U.S. or Canadian grocery store.

It's your right to choose Non-GMO.  This brings a new meaning to "you are what you eat" if you're not really sure what you're eating.  Right?  Read the labels, ask questions, and look for the Non-GMO seal on products.

After the Retreat, Lauren went to the grocery store determined to find a canned tuna without the ingredient of soy.  She had the stock boys helping her read labels and they were unsuccessful in the search for tuna without soy.  As shown above 93% of all soy is GMO; unless the label says otherwise assume GMO.

I'm not saying to throw away every food product in your household, but start small and make better choices when you are replacing your staples.  I don't know about you, but I enjoy eating food the way nature intended it to be eaten, in a whole unaltered state as much as possible.  Look for Organic and Non-GMO labels on products; produce stickers that start with #9 are organically grown.

{ weekend } The Great Outdoors & Halloween Shopping

Día de los Muertos
Bonjour!  The great outdoors is calling me with this phenomenal weather.  Nature has many health benefits of its own and all you have to do to reap them is get outside and enjoy the green nature around you.

I enjoyed my first day off in since October 3rd.  Ah, Saturday... has to be my favorite day of the week.  I slept in for the first time in a while.  After trying to get rid of my caffeine withdraw with homemade brew, we headed to Einstein's for a bite to eat and took a short drive to Philippe Park to enjoy the scenery and fresh air. The park is peaceful until screaming kids go by, but I like the Indian Mound, water views and basking in the sunshine.

After breakfast we took Roxy home and ventured out to do some Halloween shopping... starting with Goodwill and Salvation Army, then to the House of Make Believe (my favorite costume store ever) and a few other random stops.  So far I have makeup, one accessory and a head brimming with ideas for a costume gone wild with imagination.  Stay tuned...

The Annual T-Tapp Fitness Retreat was Fabulous!

I'm living at the beautiful Safety Harbor Resort & Spa for a whole week!  LOVE this place!

Safety Harbor Spa is the largest spa facility in the southern US -- the spa alone is about 40,000 square feet!  Located on Tampa Bay, the Spa has a great water view and downtown feel with shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance.  I'm working the T-Tapp Retreat, so I don't get spa time...but I do get to workout and enjoy the speakers!

I took almost 500 images with my boyfriend's Canon Rebel DSLR during the Retreat and can't wait to go through them.  (Everyone is calling me "Camera Casey" now!)  This event has been my favorite of them all.  They get better and better every year!  It was like a big T-Tapper reunion and we had some Retreat newbies too, with a lot of cutting edge health education on healing cancer naturally, hormones and the thyroid gland, the power of transdermal magnesium and prill beads, and how to be a beauty detective.  I learned some new things, probably lost a few inches and really had a genuinely great weekend!

I have SO much more to tell you about this fabulous Retreat.  Tonight our Trainer Certification Retreat began and we're getting ready to workout in the morning with Teresa, followed by a trainer teaching T-Tapp workouts every hour all day long.  Wishing good luck to all our Trainers!

Au revoir!

Finding Seasonal Produce: Autumn

Bonjour!

Autumn is here and I'm starting to see more seasonal produce.  One exciting thing about seasons changing is cooking with local (if possible) seasonal ingredients.  Your food will have more flavor and your taste-buds will thank you!

Last summer I wrote a blog post about Finding Seasonal Produce. Veggies and fruits are key component to healthy eating. Consuming produce fresh from harvest is the best way to get the highest level of vitamins and minerals.

Remember that most mainstream produce is shipped from very far away.  How far does your produce travel? Find out at TheFoodIllusion.wordpress.com.

Smile During Exercise

Have you ever tried to smile while working out?  Yes, smile!

As you may know, my exercise program of choice is T-Tapp. With the T-Tapp workout you're involving so much of your body during each movement, that it can be a lot to think about.  (Toes forward, butt tucked, shoulders in alignment, bent knees to KLT, curling your core/pressing lower back, lift ribs, set lats, etc, etc, etc.  See what I mean!)  Adding one more thing, like a smile, can take your workout to the next level.  Try it!  I like to smile at myself in the mirror when I get to the tough exercises, especially the ones I don't feel like doing.  It makes a difference!  Smiling makes me lighten up and I seem to be able to get through the movement a bit easier.

Believe it or not, smiling has health benefits too!  Check out these Top 10 Reasons to Smile:
  1. Smiling makes us attractive
  2. Smiling changes our mood
  3. Smiling is contagious
  4. Smiling relieves stress
  5. Smiling boosts the immune system
  6. Smiling lowers blood pressure
  7. Smiling releases endorphins (ie: natural pain killers and seratonin!)
  8. Smiling lifts the face and makes us look younger
  9. Smiling makes you seem successful
  10. Smiling helps you stay positive
Numbers 2, 7 and 10 are why I think smiling helps with exercise.  It changes our mood making us more likely to start enjoying exercise, even if we don't really feel like working out.  Smiling releases endorphins making us feel better physically so we can push on through the workout.  And we all know positivity breeds positivity and smiles are contagious!  I will be trying to smile a lot more from now on.

Au revoir!

P.S. If you haven't tried T-Tapp yet, jump on the site and get started already!  T-Tapp is not an all-or-nothing approach to fitness.  Meaning, you can do the freebie moves and GET RESULTS.  I recommend checking out the Try Before You Buy section to get started.  Recession-proof eco-friendly fitness that WORKS -- you can't beat that!  What have you got to lose?

I Washed Mine, You Should Too

Hanging to dry...
Green Bags have grown in popularity over the past few years, and I like that.  They were like a new fashion trend around here.  Once our local Publix grocery store had them, every other store with consumer goods seemed to follow suit.  But this "trend" didn't start with a chain grocery store, it began years and years ago with the awareness and wisdom of Earth conscious individuals.  I'm all for our massive population using less plastic anything.  You may not realize just how much this man-made material is affecting our planet.  More research comes out on the dangers of plastics all the time.  Remember the big buzz about bad BPA plastics?

Most of the "green bags" you see in the grocery stores are made from Polypropylene, basically plastic fabric that is washable.  I washed my green bags with a few towels and hung them up to dry.  (I must have a bag in every color of the rainbow!  This isn't even my complete collection.) The fabric dries quickly and as for the little plastic liner at the bottom, I hand washed those separately.

It's important to wash your reusable bags regularly to rid them of bacteria.  Designate certain bags for carrying meat/poultry/fish/eggs only, and other bags for produce, breads, or boxed items.

Wheatgrass Detox

I discovered the power of wheatgrass this morning!

Yesterday I got breakfast from Jamba Juice and was craving it again today. Jamba Juice has created an extensive menu since I did a marketing project on them in college. (We got the highest grade in the class for that project, btw.) I ordered the wheatgrass shot (I've been craving greens in the morning for weeks now) and a Blueberry & Blackberry Steel-cut Oatmeal with just a little brown sugar. They cut the wheatgrass fresh and juiced it right there. I drank the shot at the store... and thought it tasted so good! I wanted more.

Within 10 minute of starting my work day I was running to the bathroom so I didn't throw up green stuff on the floor... and ended up going back several times to repeat the process. I feel disgusting right now and wondered why it affected me like this. Good old Google came to the rescue as usual! I Googled: "nauseous from wheatgrass"...

According to Cityfarmer.org:

Besides detoxification, another reason why one might feel nauseous after drinking wheatgrass juice is if you drank it with or after a meal. Wheatgrass juice does not combine well with other foods and should always be taken on an empty stomach. After you drink wheatgrass juice, we suggest waiting an hour before eating; that's about how long it takes for the juice to be assimilated.

Finally, if you drink too much wheatgrass juice, you could feel uncomfortable. The general rule is to drink no more than 3 ounces at a time. (This isn't orange juice; don't try to shoot down an 8-ounce glass of it!)

In the health food industry it is said, "The more you feel it, the more you need it."

I Googled "benefits of wheatgrass" and the first site that came up was Hippocrates Institute, where Teresa Tapp (my boss) has done T-Tapp clinics and seminars over the years. Hippocrates is a renowned place here in Florida for total body wellness and healing.

Benefits of Wheatgrass from Hippocrates Institute
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-aging
  • Increases red blood-cell count
  • Lowers blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body
  • Cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris
  • Stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood
  • Restores alkalinity to the blood
  • Powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector
  • Fights tumors and neutralizes toxins
  • Contains beneficial enzymes
  • Soothes and heals a variety of skin issues when applied topically

Wheatgrass also...

Works as a sleep aide. Merely place a tray of living wheatgrass near the head of your bed. It will enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help you sleep more soundly.

Enhances your bath. Add some to your bath water and settle in for a nice, long soak.

Sweetens the breath and firms up and tightens gums. Just gargle with the juice.

Neutralizes toxic substances like cadmium, nicotine, strontium, mercury, and polyvinyl chloride.

And the chlorophyll in wheatgrass closely resembles hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood.

Wheatgrass is such an AMAZING Superfood! Looks like I may need to drink a shot a day for a little while to accelerate this detox I'm going through. I still have not been able to eat more than a few bites of my oatmeal... waiting out the nausea. Serves me right for skipping the Far Infrared Sauna, workouts, green drinks and Kangen alkaline water for almost 2 weeks! My body craves and needs all of those things regularly or else this happens. I think I've learned my lesson... the hard way this time.

On a lighter note my tummy is super flat and my jeans are literally falling off me today.

Au revoir!

Seeing Red

Last night my right eye started to bother me and it got really red. I mean really red. A few years back I kept getting pink eye every few months, so I went back to my eye doctor this morning. She said that I have Iritis, which is swelling and irritation of the middle layer of the eye. It's probably due to some environmental thing, such as pollen or mold because this happens to be almost every March. I've never been allergic to anything before. Have to say that it's not fun at all.

My eye drops: one for the healthy dry eye and one for the inflamed red eye.

Have a checkup next Friday. Also need to get my vision checked. Think I need glasses!

Exercise

Tempo Lower Body Standing + body/face brushing.

I woke up before the sun to squeeze in a workout. My body has been screaming for it this week. Feeling SO much better now. Might do some floor exercises tonight too.

Hitting the FIR sauna after work with Jen today. Can't wait!

Eats

Brekkie

Raspberry Green Monster.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup frozen organic raspberries
  • 2 cups fresh organic spinach
  • 1 cup Silk Almond Milk
  • 1 Tbsp organic flax
  • 1/4 tsp bee pollen
  • cold water

Will be switching to blueberries next week... these seeds are driving me nuts.

Tea

I treated myself to Starbucks on the way home from the eye doctor, but not an espresso latte...

Grande Vanilla Rooibos Nonfat Latte.

I think I've found my new favorite!

Lunch

Kashi Mayan Harvest Bake.

Doesn't look much like the photo on the box after the microwave...
it was pretty tasty though!

Snacked on some of the cut of veggies in this salad.
