Smile During Exercise

Have you ever tried to smile while working out?  Yes, smile!

As you may know, my exercise program of choice is T-Tapp. With the T-Tapp workout you're involving so much of your body during each movement, that it can be a lot to think about.  (Toes forward, butt tucked, shoulders in alignment, bent knees to KLT, curling your core/pressing lower back, lift ribs, set lats, etc, etc, etc.  See what I mean!)  Adding one more thing, like a smile, can take your workout to the next level.  Try it!  I like to smile at myself in the mirror when I get to the tough exercises, especially the ones I don't feel like doing.  It makes a difference!  Smiling makes me lighten up and I seem to be able to get through the movement a bit easier.

Believe it or not, smiling has health benefits too!  Check out these Top 10 Reasons to Smile:
  1. Smiling makes us attractive
  2. Smiling changes our mood
  3. Smiling is contagious
  4. Smiling relieves stress
  5. Smiling boosts the immune system
  6. Smiling lowers blood pressure
  7. Smiling releases endorphins (ie: natural pain killers and seratonin!)
  8. Smiling lifts the face and makes us look younger
  9. Smiling makes you seem successful
  10. Smiling helps you stay positive
Numbers 2, 7 and 10 are why I think smiling helps with exercise.  It changes our mood making us more likely to start enjoying exercise, even if we don't really feel like working out.  Smiling releases endorphins making us feel better physically so we can push on through the workout.  And we all know positivity breeds positivity and smiles are contagious!  I will be trying to smile a lot more from now on.

Au revoir!

P.S. If you haven't tried T-Tapp yet, jump on the site and get started already!  T-Tapp is not an all-or-nothing approach to fitness.  Meaning, you can do the freebie moves and GET RESULTS.  I recommend checking out the Try Before You Buy section to get started.  Recession-proof eco-friendly fitness that WORKS -- you can't beat that!  What have you got to lose?

Get Healthy & Fit Game Plan

This time of year is known to get people to make healthier choices. Spring is just around the corner and I want to be healthier and fit by then. I was planning on starting a new Get Healthy & Fit Game Plan after seeing my depressing January Jump Start Challenge results. Normally I get amazing results with T-Tapp, but there is so much else going on with my body that I need to take other things into account. What better time than NOW to begin making healthier choices.

"Exercise is your king, and nutrition is your queen. Together they create your fitness kingdom." -- Jack LaLanne
I'm going to take that quote to heart focus on those two things: exercise and nutrition.

Here's my plan...

Do At Least Three 45+ Minute T-Tapp Workouts Per Week
Now that the January Jump Start Challenge is over, I can do whatever workouts and exercises I want to do. It's a sigh of relief really. I loved using T-Tapp MORE, but will be glad to go back to using workouts like Tempo 2, Maxi Max #1 and Ladybug Workout.

Workout Plan:
  • I'm going to start with a 4-day Boot Camp using Tempo 2 - 8 Reps. If I have enough time and energy after that workout I will go to the floor and add: Organs in Place/Half Frogs, 30 Crunches, 15 Oblique Sit-ups (each side), Awesome Legs, Pretzel Twist and Diva Derriere.
  • After Boot Camp I will switch to an every other day schedule, which is 3 full workouts per week with days off in between. I will start to mix up my routine a bit by using different T-Tapp workouts during the week.
  • Off days (aka Rest Days) can be taken completely off OR do 20 minutes or less of T-Tapp movement OR walk outside using T-Tapp techniques. Either Basic Plus Tempo, T-Tapp MORE OR Primary Back Stretch + the floor moves listed above will be my go-to off day routine.
I want to start doing some yoga and more core building moves in addition to T-Tapp. Angela @ Oh She Glows did a Whittle My Middle 30-Day Challenge that included a lot of core building moves that I would love to do. So I may work in her little routine a few days a week.

Body Brush Daily
I need to keep up this habit up. Found that I really missed brushing during my vacation! Body brushing helps with reducing inflammation, as well as exercising the skin to keep it tight and reduce the appearance of cellulite, but it also has a lot of other benefits too! Click that body brushing link above to read my previous blog on this subject.

Eat Clean, God-made, Organic and Anti-inflammatory Foods
I will try to follow Teresa Tapp's God-made/Man-made (GM/MM) dietary guidelines for the most part. These simple guidelines limit the amount of man-made processed foods to every third day. So you eat clean, wholesome, naturally found-on-Earth foods for 2 days; then can eat something you've been craving, like pizza or brownies, on the third day. The 2 days of eating clean allow your body the time to process the man-made foods. God-made foods include: fruit, vegetables, lean meats, dairy, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

I will buy all organic produce, meats and grains as much as possible. I want to feed my body the best nutrition I can find, without all of the pesticides, chemicals, food additives and GMOs.

I really like Dr. Weil's Anti-inflammatory Diet Tips! And Dr. Perricone has always promoted eating anti-inflammatory foods to slow aging and increase body efficiency. Dr. Perricone even calls the T-Tapp workout "the anti-aging workout" in his book Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular Rejuvenation. Amazing! Here's his take on pro-inflammatory foods:

Foods can be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory. Pro-inflammatory foods promote wrinkles, disease, accelerate aging and cause the storage of fat. Pro-inflammatory, sugary, starchy foods causes a loss of radiance, dark circles under the eyes, loss of tone, increased line and wrinkles, loss of facial contours, increased puffiness and pore size. These foods also exacerbate acne, which is a systemic, inflammatory disease. Sugars and starches rob your youth, health and beauty.
Beauty, yet another reason to eat clean!

Limit Alcohol to 1-2 Glasses of Wine Per Week
I'm omitting beer and grain alcohol since they tend to put on weight faster. All alcohol is pro-inflammatory, so I figure a glass or two of wine per week won't hurt my results much.

Limit Added Sugar and Dessert
I want to try to cut out sugar in my coffee in the morning and other products that have added sugars as much as I can. I may even cut out coffee altogether and switch to organic tea instead.

I'm also going to limit dessert to one time every other week. Not that I eat that many sweets, but over the last month I did enjoy some ice cream and chocolates.

Getting waterlogged daily with 2-3 liters
Lately I have been reaching my 2 liter goal per day, but it can't hurt to drink more water.

That's it for now! Some of my other goals are nutrition related. I need to find a good daily multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and to start taking Vitamin D3 and Omega-3 daily.

Wish me luck!

Getting Started: T-Tapp at Your Own Pace

Recently I've been talking to many new T-Tappers about how to get started. There seems to be a general concept out there about fitness that more is always better, but with T-Tapp less is really more. New T-Tappers are trying to rush through the Instructional Workouts to get to the workout without the instruction. The problem here is that the Instructional Workouts build the foundation of your understanding of the exercises and proper form, plus allow your body to start building the mind-to-body connection needed to make it through the entire T-Tapp workout. The better the understanding of the Instructional Workouts the better the overall results from the program will be.

This morning a post on the T-Tapp Forum really caught my eye and totally relates to this topic. Read on...

Breaking down my T-Tapp goals (by LisaG)
When I first got the book, less than 2 weeks ago, I was so inspired by the success stories! It was encouraging to see so many women who began at my size, and were able to become slim. I even saw women with "c-section aprons", who had gotten rid of them! This gave me so much hope, and I began to set my sights high.

After having trouble following the directions in the book, I ordered a DVD. My goal was to do the Basic Workout Plus instructional for 4 days in a row, then do the regular version for the next 10, taking off only on Sundays.

I got my DVD yesterday, and have used it for the past 2 days. I now realize that I need to slow down on my own expectations. My new goal is to do my personal best each day. Because I am so heavy, uncoordinated, and have a short torso, I am not able to do some of the exercises yet. I don't know how long it will take before I am ready to move from instructional to regular Basic Workout, but that doesn't matter - I am making progress every day, and that is what I am going to focus on.

LisaG is on the right track! The important part of this message is to do your personal best and take it one day (or workout) at a time. With T-Tapp, as long as you are working to your best ability you will make progress, get results and reap the health benefits.

If you feel as if you cannot complete an entire workout, even if it is Instructional Workout #1, you only need to go to your personal maximum ability. Meaning, if you cannot stay in correct form and keep up with Teresa, then only do as many repetitions as you can with correct form. If you can only complete 4 repetitions at your maximum, don’t worry; you will still lose inches! It is actually better to do fewer repetitions with your best form, than it is to do as many as Teresa with bad form. Slower is better. Most newcomers have the impression that if they don't do all the repetitions they will not get the results - this is not true. The T-Tapp workout works for all fitness levels. As long as you go to your potential and do the form correctly you will see the results, get stronger, and be able to progress to Teresa's level with time. It's a learning process in the beginning and its not easy, but trust me... the more effort you put in the better results you will see with inch loss and your overall health.

Using the Total Workout

The T-Tapp Total Workout is the original T-Tapp exercise program. ABC TV in Philadelphia called the T-Tapp Total Workout "The Workout that Works" for all ages and fitness levels. This total body workout has a special sequence of comprehensive, compound muscle movements that use isometric linear alignment along with lymphatic pumping to deliver higher aerobic, strength, flexibility and body sculpting - as well as rehabilitative benefits to shoulders, back, hips and knees. Inches drop quickly since muscles are developed with density, not bulk, to cinch-in, uplift, tighten and tone. The Total Workout also teaches how to increase intensity without adding weights or repetitions so you can always challenge your body and get results with only one set of 8 repetitions. Less IS more with T-Tapp! The Total Workout delivers a full body program that not only builds a better body with optimal fitness and wellness, but helps you keep it for the rest of your life.

The T-Tapp Total Workout includes:

  • Instructional Workout #1: teaches how to do each exercise step by step with detailed instruction.
  • 15 Minute Basic Workout Plus: includes all of the movements from Instructional Workout #1 done without instruction at the regular pace, plus the exercise Hoe Downs.

  • Instructional Workout #2: teaches how to do each exercise in the second half step by step with detailed instruction.
  • 55 Minute Total Workout: includes all of the movements from both Instructional Workout #1 and Instructional Workout #2 done without instruction at the regular pace.

Plus...

Basic Plus Tempo

  • NEW Basic Plus Tempo - Level 2 DVD*: This workout is the next level after the 15 Minute Basic Workout done with increased muscle activation techniques for better results. Basic Plus Tempo is an 18-minute routine will help to push your fitness level up a notch. Also includes a separate menu for you to choose the exercises individually.

  • Yes You Can With T-Tapp Seminar DVD: a 90-minute seminar explaining how and why the T-Tapp program works, includes several exercises to target different areas of concern (arms, torso, back fat, stomach, thighs, knees, inner core balance) and how to apply T-Tapp techniques with daily activity.
  • Total Workout Audio CD: This is an audio recording of the Total Workout DVD and also includes the Basic Plus Tempo audio recording as well. Great for travel! Download to your MP3 player and go.
  • Measuring Tips
  • How To Guidelines booklet
  • God Made/Man Made Dietary Program brochure
  • Additional Tips for Optimal Results brochure
  • Unlimited Free Tech Support

Once you have the Total Workout, you will start with the Instructional Workouts. They will teach you the proper form and techniques for each exercise. You will first do the Instructional Workout #1. Do the Instructional Workout #1 until you feel comfortable with all the exercises. Depending on your fitness level you may spend anywhere from a few days to a month on each Instructional workout. Since you are working out with Teresa on the Instructionals you will see results, so there is no rush to get to the Total Workout.

Once you know feel comfortable with the exercises and proper form on Instructional Workout #1 you will be able to progress to the Basic Workout Plus. Basic Workout Plus takes the place of Instructional Workout #1 because it includes all the same exercises, but it is done without all the instruction and Teresa adds the exercise Hoe Downs. This way you can go straight through the workout in only 15 minutes! You may want to use the Basic Workout Plus a few times to get accustomed to doing the exercises straight through.

When you are ready you will add the Instructional Workout #2 after completing the Basic Workout Plus. Please note that each day you do both the Basic Workout Plus and Instructional Workout #2 back-to-back it is considered a full workout and is counted as a day of Bootcamp. Continue to use the Basic Workout Plus and Instructional Workout #2 back-to-back until you feel comfortable with all the movements on Instructional Workout #2. Once you feel confident with the exercises on the Instructional Workout #2 you will be able to use JUST the Total Workout. Continue on to do a Bootcamp using the Total Workout until you have reached your desired results.

I personally spent 2 full weeks on my Instructional Workouts; week 1 was Instructional #1 once a day for 7 days in a row and week 2 was Instructional #2 once a day for 7 days in a row. Then I moved on to the Total Workout and started my 4-day Bootcamp as outlined in your DVD booklet.

Overtraining is possible with T-Tapp, as it is with any exercise program. If you do too much you can slow or stop your results completely because you aren't allowing your body to rest and repair muscles after tough workouts. Excessive intense physical activity releases stress hormones, such as cortisol, into the body. This can actually inhibit weight loss, causing your body to react by storing fat and retaining water out of self-protection. In relation to T-Tapp, you don't want to do a Bootcamp longer than 14 days in a row using the Total Workout to prevent overtraining.

If you purchased another starter system, like the Basic Workout Plus or T-Tapp MORE, and have questions just let me know. I'll be more than happy to walk you through the best way to get started with your program. Give me a call at the T-Tapp office Monday through Friday! 1.877.TAPP.FIT (877.827.7348) OR email me at casey@t-tapp.com.

Happy T-Tapping!

2009 T-Tapp Retreat: Power of Mindful Movement

Date: Thursday, October 1st through Sunday, October 4th

Location: Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, Safety Harbor, Florida

Trainer: Teresa Tapp

The focus of this year’s Retreat is the Power of Mindful Movement for Better Brain and Body Function, including Menopause Management. Teresa Tapp will teach how to implement the primary principles of T-Tapp and muscle activation techniques into daily activity to optimize metabolic function and how to apply T-Tapp techniques to improve effectiveness of traditional exercise training and how to increase the intensity of any T-Tapp workout without increasing reps or sets.

We are so delighted go have Mary Shomon as our keynote speaker this year! She will share her expertise on how to optimize thyroid function, as well as dysfunction along with menopause management. With her new book, The Menopause Thyroid Solution, comes out in July 2009 and features over 30 pages about T-Tapp! In fact, a special clinic will be offered on the workout featured in her book called "Mindful Movement for Menopause Management" at this Retreat. We'll have a book signing opportunity for everyone too.

Each day of the Retreat we'll be doing a morning stretch, a full workout and a specialty clinic along with our usual wine and cheese reception, hearty meals with some healthy options, and decadent coffee bar. A T-Tapp Retreat isn't your typical fitness retreat! Remember the average inch loss during the Retreat is 8 inches – and that's not water weight – it's YOURS for the long term! Complete schedule will be posted shortly.

Additionally, due to popular demand, this year's retreat will have a special "click session clinic" that will teach everyone how to look better in pictures, how to walk a catwalk, how to make your legs look longer (and leaner) while sitting, and how to step down stairs without looking down or losing balance. Lots of tips and shared secrets will be revealed from Teresa Tapp’s experience of 20 years working within the modeling world of fashion.

If you haven't met T-Tapp Trainer Heather Petrie, who was featured in People magazine (June 1st, 2009 issue) and on Good Morning America, just wait until you have the opportunity to meet her at the Retreat! Heather has a passion for helping people dealing with debilitating diseases and helping them regain their health. She has lost over 100 pounds with T-Tapp and kept it off for 9 years!

Charlotte Siems will also be attending the Retreat this year. We’re happy to have her back to share more of her inspiring journey to wellness. Did you miss Charlotte’s T-Tapp Success Story video clip from the last two Retreats? Watch it Now!

Immediately following the Retreat we are hosting the T-Tapp Trainer Certifications at the Safety Harbor Spa starting Monday, October 5th through Wednesday, October 7th. During the Trainer Certification Retreat, you may attend as many T-Tapp Certification classes as you wish for free (just pay hotel room). There will also be additional Guest Speakers during this event. Details coming soon!

In the meantime, Teresa decided that we can't delay signups any longer, especially when travel prices are at an all time low. This year's Early Bird Special of $1,395.00 for a single room or $1,095.00 for a shared room will be good through June 30th... JOURNAL

Went to the chiropractor this morning before work. My massage therapist feels that my body is responding well to the treatments. She says I have "healthy tissue". The adjustment was a bit off because my neck muscles we still not releasing the axis. Apparently that's out and I also have a rib that's giving me trouble now (also why I could not breathe last night). Still supposed to ice, ice, ice!

Still feeling pretty bad. Think I over did it this weekend (too much walking and not enough resting). This coming weekend I'm going to be a couch potato. Clothes are already feeling tighter on the lower body (a real downer). At least I'm starting to body brush again!

Not allowed to workout for about 3 more weeks! It's killing me. I want to do Hoe Downs so bad... and can't even stretch yet. I will be working with a trainer to exercise when the doctor thinks I'm ready. All I can do is walk (using T-Tapp techniques at least).

Made more appointments today:

Monday, March 30th: 4:00pm (no massage today)
Wednesday, April 1st: 4:00pm
Friday, April 3rd: 4:00pm

Netflix for Fitness

This weekend while looking for movies to watch online I discovered the Netflix has fitness videos! You can even watch many of them instantly online, which is fabulous. I've been wanting to check out some yoga/pilates videos (most of them have 3 stars). Go to Netflix.com > Sports & Fitness > Workouts.

Here are some that I want to try:
As I try these I'll post about my experience.

My Progression

Since starting my blog I've kept track of measurements, progress photos and overall results. Here's a summary of my progress over the years.

Monday, September 20, 2004

Hello Blog World!

I'm starting this blog for personal reasons only - to keep track of my health, workouts and how I feel from day to day. I was in a car accident on September 4, 2002 and have been dealing with whiplash and pain as a result. My attorney told me to keep track of these things, so I'm using the blog as an outlet.

Things I will keep track off...

  • Essentials: water, exercise, body brushing
  • Supplements: to help me feel better
  • Food: to track how healthy I'm eating and where I could improve
  • How I Feel: to track how my body is healing as a result of the accident

Ready to get started!
